Entrevista com Kent Hill

Entrevista com Kenneth Hill, unico jogador estrangeiro do clube. Passou por cá há mais de 20 anos. Foi agora possível chegar à fala com ele. Ainda está bem fresca na sua memória a passagem por Reguengos.

Almost twenty-two years after the passage through the ASC / BVRM / Terras d'el Rei from the first and so far only American player, is now possible to do an interview with him. Its our goal to know a little bit more of the man and the player who, in the distant year of 1989, "landed" in the peaceful village of Reguengos, causing everyone's amazement. In the club direction (then Basketball section) there were a dedicated director, tireless, possessing an extraordinary work and organizational ability. He had, in a couple of seasons, made an enormous contribution to the growth of basketball. I refer to Dr. Antonio Luis. He said, when reaching the club, that their involvement would be full but his stay would have a time limit, as it turned out to be. It came from him this desire and initiative of the acquisition of an American player who could contribute to the enrichment of the club's senior team, which at that time played at the 3rd National Division (it was possible to include a foreign athlete). Indeed so it came to happen. That player arrived in Portugal in the company of another compatriot (Tom Ovars) bound for Sporting. The agent was the same and contacts were made by the coach at Sporting - Eng Mario Silva, who we kept and still maintain friendship. Kent Hill finally reached Reguengos. In a small province land he experienced homesick, although his teammates and managers sought to soften. Another aspect which has created adaptation difficultys was the very low temperature, characteristic of our winter. In the field, he was very important for the team. But unfortunately, not as much as we wish, as a result of the unavailability and misunderstanding of some colleagues. Some could not fully understand the tremendous effort that the Club was doing  to have a professional player within the group. Let us speak with kent, now.	Praticamente vinte e dois anos depois da passagem pelo ASC/BVRM/Terras d’el Rei do primeiro e até agora único jogador americano, surgiu a possibilidade de com ele fazermos uma entrevista. Nela procura-se dar a conhecer um pouco do homem e do jogador que, no longínquo ano de 1989, “aterrou” positivamente na então pacata vila de Reguengos, provocando o espanto de todos. Da Direcção do Clube (então Secção de Basquetebol) fazia parte, na altura um dedicado dirigente, incansável, possuidor de uma capacidade de trabalho e organização extraordinária que, ao longo de algumas épocas deu um enorme contributo para o crescimento do Basquetebol. Refiro-me ao Dr. António Luís. Quando chegou à Secção disse que o seu envolvimento seria total mas a sua permanência teria um limite temporal, como se veio a verificar. Partiu deste dirigente o desejo e a iniciativa da aquisição de um jogador americano, que pudesse contribuir para o enriquecimento do plantel sénior do Clube que, nessa época, jogava na 3ª Divisão Nacional e onde era permitida a inclusão de um atleta estrangeiro. Com efeito assim veio a acontecer. Chegou a Portugal na companhia de um outro compatriota (Tom Ovars) com destino ao Sporting. O empresário era o mesmo e os contactos fizeram-se através do treinador dessa temporada no Sporting – o Eng.º Mário Silva, com quem mantínhamos e mantemos relação de amizade. O Kent Hill finalmente chegou a Reguengos e, numa pequena terra de província viveu os primeiros tempos roído de saudades, que os companheiros de equipa e dirigentes procuraram suavizar. Um outro aspecto que lhe criou dificuldade foi a temperatura muito baixa característica do nosso Inverno. No aspecto desportivo foi importante para a equipa. Mas, infelizmente, não tanto como desejaríamos, fruto da indisponibilidade e da incompreensão de alguns jogadores, pelo tremendo esforço que o Clube fazia ao ter um jogador profissional no seio do grupo. É chegado o tempo de iniciarmos a entrevista com o Kent.
Kent, many years after your short stay in Portugal, we would like to know how are you doing nowadays? I’m doing well. Staying busy at work and enjoying my family.	Kent, muito anos após a tua curta estadia em Portugal, gostaríamos de saber como te encontras, actualmente? Vou indo bem. O trabalho mantêm-me ocupado, e vou desfrutando da minha família.
Our readers would like to know who is Kenneth Hill. Can you give us a short presentation of yourself?  My name is Kent Hill and I was in Portugal a little over 20 years ago playing on the local basketball team in Reguengos. Came from the United States (South Carolina). My wife’s name is Tracy and I  have a 15 year old son name Xavier and a 12 year old son name Winston. Winston plays basketball, football, and baseball and Xavier used to play 3 sports but now only basketball for the high school.	Os nossos leitores também gostariam de saber quem é o Kenneth Hill. Podes dar-nos uma curta apresentação da tua pessoa. Chamo-me Kent Hill e estive em Portugal há pouco mais de 20 anos a jogar basquetebol em Reguengos, vindo dos USA (Carolina do Sul). A minha mulher chama-se Tracy, o meu filho Xavier tem 15 anos e o Winston 12. O Winston joga basquetebol, futebol americano e basebol. O Xavier também costumava praticar esses 3 desportos, mas agora só joga basquetebol no secundário.
What are you presently doing (career, hobbys)?  I’m currently a Financial Analyst Manager and Cost Accounting Manager for a company in Columbia South Carolina. I enjoy watching basketball, baseball, and football. I also have recently began playing golf.	Qual é a tua profissão e hobbys? Trabalho numa companhia em Columbia, na Carolina do Sul, como Analista Financeiro e Contabilista. Gosto de ver basquetebol, basebol e futebol americano. Recentemente comecei também a praticar golf.
Are you still connected to basketball?  Still connected to basketball by coaching. I coach a summer AAU basketball team that my son plays on. Two year ago we won the National Championship for the boys 14 and under age group. I don’t coach my youngest son but we train a lot together and I see all of his games. I also still play some at the local gyms. My knees don’t allow me to play much but still do a little.	Ainda estás ligado ao basquetebol? Estou ligado como treinador. Treino uma equipa da União Atlética Amadora, na qual o meu filho joga. Há dois anos vencemos o nacional de sub-14. E embora não seja treinador do meu filho mais novo, treinamos muito juntos e não perco um jogo dele. Ainda gosto de jogar aqui nos ginásios locais. Os meus joelhos não me permitem fazer muito, mas ainda dou uns toques.
What is your sporting past, before Portugal? What about after being here?  Played college ball for The Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina. I had over 1,000 points and over 500 rebounds in my college career and was MVP 2 years. After leaving Portugal I played for a couple leagues in the states. About 2 years after leaving Portugal a knee surgery ended my competitive career.	Como foi o teu passado desportivo, antes de Portugal? E depois de saires de cá? Joguei a nível colegial no The Citadel (Carolina do Sul). Obtive mais de 1000 pontos e para cima de 500 ressaltos na minha carreira colegial e fui MVP em 2 anos distintos. Depois de sair de Portugal, joguei cá em mais algumas ligas e 2 anos depois uma operação ao joelho terminou a minha carreira competitiva.
The club and the team you played for in Portugal was very modest. What memories do you have of the club, colleagues and people in general?  I was very nervous about coming to Portugal to play, but it was a way to continue my career after not making NBA club. My first time being in a foreign country and I could not speak language. Was very homesick at first. My teammates were very good to me and I really became close to a few of them. They all made me feel more comfortable and that helped me not think about home so much. Although the basketball stay was short, I really appreciated the kindness from my teammates and all others in the town.	O clube e a equipa que representaste aqui em Portugal era (é) muito modesto. Que memórias guardas do clube, colegas e pessoas em geral? Eu estava muito nervoso acerca de vir para Portugal, mas era uma forma de continuar a minha carreira depois de não ter conseguido entrar em clubes da NBA. Foi a primeira vez que fui ao estrangeiro, para um país cuja língua não entendia. Tive muitas saudades de casa no princípio, mas os meus colegas eram muito bons para mim e fiquei bastante amigo de alguns deles. Fizeram-me sentir mais confortável e a não pensar tanto na minha casa. Apesar da curta estadia, apreciei bastante a simpatia e gentileza dos meus colegas e das pessoas na vila.
How do you think basketball helps shape the character and integrity of young athletes?  Basketball, as well as, most team sports help young kids build character and integrity. It helps them learn how to interact with others as a team, and how to handle tough losses and how to be a gracious winner. I really enjoy working with the younger kids and teach them ball skills and life learning lessons.	Como pensas que o basquetebol ajuda a moldar o carácter dos jovens atletas? O basquetebol, assim como a maior parte dos desportos de equipa, ajuda a desenvolver o caracter e integridade. Ajuda-nos a interagir com os outros como equipa, a lidar com derrotas amargas e a saber ganhar. Adoro trabalhar com jovens e ensinar técnicas de basquetebol e lições de vida.
What advice can you give our young players to succeed in this sport?  Work extremely hard and be dedicated to excel at whatever sport you participate in. ‘Hard Work will beat talent, when Talent does not work hard.’ If you work harder than someone who may have more talent than you, you can still beat that person.	Que conselho podes dar aos nossos jovens para obterem sucesso neste desporto? Trabalhar no duro e ser dedicado para alcançar a excelência em qualquer desporto que pratiquem. “Trabalhar árduo ganhará ao talento, quando o talento não trabalha arduamente”. Se trabalharem mais arduamente que alguém que eventualmente tenha mais talento que vocês, poderão ter mais sucesso que ele.
Anything else you would like to say?  I hope all my teammates from so long ago are doing very well. I really thank you for everything in my short time there.	Mais alguma coisa que queiras dizer? Espero que todos os meus colegas de há tanto tempo estejam bem na vida. Agradeço tudo o que fizeram por mim no pouco tempo que aí estive.
